Gujarat University (GU), Ahmedabad

Gujarat University was conceived in the minds of some learned men in the 1920s like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai and many others. However, the University came into existence only after 1947. In 1949, the University was incorporated under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government ‘as a teaching and affiliating University.’

During the course of its life of more than five decades, the University has seen the establishment of seven more Universities which were carved out of the jurisdiction of the Gujarat University, viz., Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University and North Gujarat University.

Even then, the Gujarat University is the largest university in the state catering to the needs of higher education of more than four lakh students scattered over 286 colleges, 22 recognised institutions and 24 approved institutions. There are 36 Post-Graduate University departments and 221 P.G. Centres. New 140250 students are enrolled at under graduate level and Post Graduate level in academic year 2016-17.

Gujarat University is an affiliating University at the under-graduate level, while it is a teaching one at the post-graduate level. An important feature of this University is the system of external examinations in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, both and under-graduate and post-graduate levels.

Gujarat University Library

The Gujarat University Library was established in 1951. Right from a modest beginning in the year 1951 with 1,700 books and 170 periodicals in the temporary building & Transferred from temporary to Existing New Building in 1967. The architectural and structural building of the library is like an open book. There are 4 floors in the building with a large basement of stack area and a reading center.

Gujarat University has established one of Largest University Library System across the State that indeed plays a vital role in the acquisition and dissemination of academic and research information to meet the present and future needs of the University.

Admission in Gujarat University

Gujarat University provides undergraduate courses like BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BArch, LLB, BEd, BPEd, Bachelors of Drama, BLIS and Bachelor of Animation to its affiliated colleges. It also provides postgraduate degree like MA, MSc, MCom, MCA, M.Arch, MEd, MPEd, Master of Drama, MLIS and Master of Animation. It provides an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in the medical domain.

For MBBS admission, a valid score in NEET UG is mandatory.
MD/ MS and MDS admission is subject to candidates’ performance in NEET PG and NEET MDS entrances respectively.
For admission to PhD, entrance test is conducted by the University. Candidates who appeared in the latest GATE/CAT are exempted from the entrance test. Candidates who have cleared NET/SET are also exempted.
